PROGRAMMED FOR
In 1577, Protestant rebels (‘Beggars’), seized power in Ghent and many other cities in the Low Countries. The Beggars resisted religious persecution and political repression. This explosive coup was the culmination of one of the most dramatic episodes in our history.
450 years later, we look back at these rebellious, heretical cities in a gripping exhibition of resistance and terror, repression and tolerance, disinformation and influence - in a historical thriller abounding in horror and beauty, with city-dwellers in the lead role.
STAM turned ten last year... time for a make-over for the permanent exhibition! Since the end of 2020 you can stroll through the new Story of Ghent.
Football makes hearts beat faster, turns people into heroes and rivals, forges new families and sends cities into raptures. Just as it has in Ghent for almost 150 years.
Feel free to touch! A fun children’s trail that leads through every room in the museum. Children become merchants, craftspeople, architects or city trippers and participate in city life. They sell cloth, make coats of arms, face façades and work out routes.
