An invisible wall winds its way round Ghent. A wall of asphalt and fine dust that separates and links neighbourhoods. City ramparts have been replaced by a ring road that is used by thousands of vehicles every day. The occupants of those vehicles have their eyes on the traffic and fail to notice that there is also life alongside the ring road. Photographer Tom Verbruggen presses the pause button. He freezes the chaos and reveals the beauty of life along the R40. His series of images is supplemented by reporter Tim F. Van der Mensbrugghe’s observations. The result is a new walk along a time-honoured route.
STAM turned ten last year... time for a make-over for the permanent exhibition! Since the end of 2020 you can stroll through the new Story of Ghent.
For centuries, the way into the city was through gigantic gates. Gates on the edge of the city, but at the centre of this exhibition. Gates that have long gone and been replaced by dynamic, colourful districts.
Feel free to touch! A fun children’s trail that leads through every room in the museum. Children become merchants, craftspeople, architects or city trippers and participate in city life. They sell cloth, make coats of arms, face façades and work out routes.
